Is there anyone out there still reading and listening?

I am missing the sense of belonging I used to have - and I still don't have much time to be out in person. Wondering what still lives here? Can discussion still be obtained and the feeling of community still achieved?

Anyone else out there searching?

This is my youngest son, Michael, when he was 2.5 years old. I snapped this photo in the hospital on the day he was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. It was one of darkest days of my life.

We spent three and a half years in treatments – ranging from daily oral chemo, sedation, spinal taps and surgery. I was a single mom with two young kids, trying to get through college and barely able to work. There was a lot of crying, toughening up, fighting and worries. My eldest son missed school and having a normal childhood and my youngest had his entire reality shifted. We were poor, tired and ragged… but we survived. My son is in remission and has been out of treatment for two long years.

One of the best gifts we were given during that terrible time was trip to DisneyLand via Make-A-Wish and the people that really made it home for us while we were there was Give Kids The World Village (http://gktw.org/).

Give Kids The World is a non-profit organization that exists only to fulfill the wishes of all children with life-threatening illnesses and their families from around the world to experience a memorable, joyful, cost-free visit to the Central Florida attractions, and to enjoy the magic of Give Kids The World Village for as long as there is a need. 100,000 children have had their dream come true at Give Kids The World. No child in need has ever been turned away – and no child ever will. Give Kids The World is a place where families find joy, laughter, serenity, and a lifetime of memories. Through the tireless support of our volunteers, employees and generous partners, we dedicate each and every day to these special families.

Kilted for Kids' Cancer
We believe in gifts. As a family, we have been through a lot of hard time but have come out on top and we want to thank all of those people who helped us through it all. September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month but our gratitude lasts all year round so we have started a movement to help give back that will not end when the month is over.

First and foremost, we want to thank our customers who have made Alt.Kilt what it is today. For the rest of the month of September, we are giving away our kid's kilts for free. Each one will have our Kilted for Kids' Cancer screen printed small on the front apron. Shipping will be added to each free kilt order. As an option, we are also collecting donations for Give Kids The World so you have the choice to write in a donation amount with your order of a kid's kilt - there is *NO* requirement to donate. Either way, the kilts are free for all kids until the end of September.

The rest of our gifts are going directly benefit our choice charity.

We are hosting an eBay auction for the next seven days featuring a "Custom Build Kilt" - you can have any thing you want (excluding full leather)... all of our fabrics, customizations - including screen printing, embroidery, unique pockets and color combination, and this even includes any of our specialty styles (as is or modified). 100% of the profits of this auction will go directly to Give Kids The World and it is located here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260666958939

For our adult kilt fans, we are also offering the addition of the Kilted for Kids' Cancer logo (as seen on the right) screen print to your Alt.Kilt order. A $25 donation has been added to the cost of the basic classic kilt and this will be passed directly on to Give Kids The World. The kilt can still be built with all available options and fabric choices.

We are also offering a selection of T-shirts and accessories that will have our Kilted for Kids' Cancer logo on it. We are donating 100% of the profits from these items to Give Kids the World for this year and every year. These will be updated as the month goes on - so check our Twitter and Facebook as new items are added. Most of these are pre-orders (as with the patches) or made-to-order as with the t-shirts. Suggestions are always welcome.

Thank you for your support of Alt.Kilt and our dedication to Give Kids the World.

I don't remember the last time I posted content to LJ and I am a bit too lazy to look it up. I still read it though - checking my friends list daily - and since a lot of people seemed to be leaving there to come here... I thought I would check in with this account. Honestly, it seems like a lot of work right now to start up a new place. All of my history is on LJ and so are my icons and memory posts.... blah blah blah, eh?

I am currently super busy - working on a feverish momentum since May of around the clock hours building kilts. I have not dipped below about 30 open orders at a time since April and have also been trying to keep growing and expanding to new arenas. It is both awesome and sucky. My summer disappeared with my kids spending most of their time with my ex-husband and his wife. They had a blast and I worked and worked. Spending 15 hours a day in a concrete box with no windows can start to grate on a person's nerves. I listened to a ton of audiobooks for sanity. (Not sure it really helped.

The busy continues as I grow Alt.Kilt. It is hectic now but I know it will all pay off in the future. Gotta, you know, look ahead and stuff.

Steampunk Grand Pauldron

The Alt.Kilt SteamShop had the great pleasure of working with Katana Design Studio on this project for a client.

This pauldron is made from 22ga mild steel with a sprayed and brushed powder-coat finish with a few customer requested features: bottle opener, speaker system, lighting (EL ground effects under the arm plates) and distressing. It can be worn attached to the bandoleer as shown, or solo.

Detail shots of the pauldron and it being worn with a complete set of our gear - the bandoleer and a custom gun holster follows.

Custom Steampunk Alt.Skirt

The Alt.Kilt Steam Shop is having a 20% off sale in celebration of our traveling to Penguicon (http://www.penguicon.org/) for the first time! We have done conventions in WI, MN and IL but never Michigan so we are excited to be driving that far to meet some new people. Everything Steampunk (and our basic kilt style) is marked the sale price from now till the end of day on April 9th. If you would like delivery of your purchase at the convention, add a note to your order and we will refund the shipping cost to you. We love custom work so please, if you are looking for something unique, send us a note and we will be happy to work with you. Thank you!

And speaking of custom work... we did a photo shoot last weekend with AB Mann that featured a custom built Steampunk mini-skirt I did for a client last November for WindyCon. We were finally able to pin her down to get some photos. This skirt featured a different design than our standard version of the kilt - including ghosted gears and a smaller removable pocket (mainly because the skirt was shorter)! We had a lot of fun doing this shoot and let our client play with power tools.

More detail photos here )

As usual - Please check out our Flickr Pool, website @ Altkilt.com and our Steampunk Etsy Store. Thank you, again!

Red Vinyl Alt.Skirt- This Alt.Skirt was built for a client in Michigan who was unable to make it for a photo shoot (*but there will be photos of her in it soon!) so we decided to take a few on another model before it traveled to its owner. The Alt.Skirt can be done in a variety of fabrics and styles. Shown here in its simplest form, this skirt has box pleats, no belt loops or pockets.

Custom Purple Punk Mini-Kilt

This is why I love my customers. I had a client ask me to change my Punk Kilt into a mini-skirt and do it in dark purple and it was a blast to create. She also requested non-real leather and so all the accents are done in a faux leather.

Over the past three years, we have made some significant changes to our kilt design. We have remade the cargo pockets so they hold more stuff better, changed our back pockets to include a cover flap and have altered both the inner and outer aprons in order to have a smoother pleat transition and more movement. Our current kilt design is the best that we have put out there and the feedback we have gotten is excellent and encouraging! Now, it is time to give everyone a chance to have our best product.

Consider this your kilt's 3,000 mile check up!

If you have one of our earlier designs - be it for cargo pockets, back pockets or apron - we would love to remake that kilt for you so you can wear our best design. From now till the end of 2009, we will accept trade-in kilts, with a fee of $75 (for custom basic kilts), $150 (for specialty kilts) or $50 (for skirts), and mail you back a new up-to-date style. This is also a perfect time to upgrade - contact us at techdragon@altkilt.com if you want to swap out your old style for a specialty kilt such as the Steampunk kilt and we will work out a suitable trade-in value.

If you have yet to try out our kilts... well, we would love to give you the chance. This offer is also available if you want to trade out an old kilt by another manufacturer. Same fee for materials and shipping and we will send you a new Alt.Kilt to wear.
