What makes a great cargo pocket: size, closure, removeability? What is the perfect version of these traits?

I'd probably figure out the absolute necessities and build a design out of that. I like something that can carry my flat wallet, maybe around the size of a small moleskine, and my phone and keys.

The closure is key. I prefer something easy to open, maybe even with one hand (or teeth or whatever -- everyone struggles when going in a door with full hands), and closing all the way, like a zipper. You could pretty it up by making a non-closing/magnetic/snap flap over it or something. Zipper alone is fine.

A pocket I can get my hand in, with a reasonable amount of expandable pleat, that when I close it, will not spill the contents of the pocket if I am kneeling or laying down or standing on my head-which, I admit, in a kilt would probably not happen, but comes closer to happening when I sail than I care to think about.

I agree with Chew, that one-handed closure is key, and with the Pirate, on keeping the contents secure. I'd also add that placing the pocket so it doesn't chafe at your leg with a full load is vital. Ill fitting cargo pants do that to me - I end up with a scrape on the outside of my thigh from walking around if I'm carrying something bulky in my pocket. In a good fitting pair, the pocket moves more naturally with me, and I don't get that.
